Inhaled steroids for treatment of asthma

Inhaled corticosteroids are medications that are administered in case of asthma by kids and grown-ups. Individuals that suffer from mild, moderate and severe asthma use these products every day. These medications prevent inflammation of the airways. Physicians supervise patients with this disease, adjusting dosage schedule every 6 weeks.
Unfortunately, inhaled corticosteroids, like other preparations, may cause adverse results. Regular administration of these medications is associated with certain risks. Is there any method for persons with asthma to prevent these problems?
A recent study has displayed that health care providers should not recommend applying these products daily to individuals with mild-to-moderate asthma. This research turned out to be very valuable. It is likely to alter instructions connected with treatment of asthma.
The study was conducted by doctors of the Texas Medical Brach in Galveston. Dr. William Calhoun and his colleagues enrolled 340 individuals with asthma in the research. Several persons received inhaled corticosteroids every day; others administered these preparations, when symptoms of asthma attacks appeared. Bronchial reactivity and functions of lungs were measured by the scientists during nine months. The results of the research manifested that there was not any significant difference between these two groups.
According to the scientists, if inhaled steroids are administered, when symptoms appear, exacerbation can be prevented. Furthermore, these preparations have long action. It means that positive effects are felt even some days after administration. The scientists suggest that these preparations may be taken by persons with mild-to-moderate asthma only when symptoms appear.
Why is this research valuable? According to certain sources, 25 million Americans suffer from asthma. Of course, they must be treated. This piece of news must be valuable for them. Moreover, if inhaled steroids are administered prolonged period of time, they may cause grave adverse results, such as hormonal imbalance, cataract, etc. Thus, if individuals that experience mild-to-moderate asthma don’t apply these medications each day, they are more unlikely to get these side results.
Of course, it is early to change recommendations linked with treatment of asthma. But this research may induce conducting further studies which may lead to several changes.
