More and more kids are subjected to tonsillectomies. The number of surgeries in children younger than 15 years old has enhanced essentially.
After tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy children may suffer from vomiting and nausea. So, physicians direct applying corticosteroids during operations in order to reduce these post-operation adverse effects.
Unluckily, while corticosteroids reduce risks/severity related to nausea and vomiting, they are associated with certain other troubles. They may lead to bleeding during and after tonsillectomies. Recent studies have manifested that the number of complications after tonsillectomies has increased during several last years. Since number of tonsillectomies becomes higher, complications occur more frequently as well.
Several scientists decided to define whether bleeding occurs after tonsillectomies on account of corticosteroids. They tried to find out whether there is any substantial difference in appearing of bleeding between children that administer the corticosteroid dexamethasone during tonsillectomies and those that don’t receive this preparation. Thus, the scientists enrolled more than 300 children in the research.
Results of the trial have demonstrated that bleeding of the levels I and II are increased by 5% in those who take a single dose of dexamethasone during tonsillectomy.
Thus, corticosteroids don’t enhance the risk connected with post-operation bleeding obviously. Although specialists doubt about safety of corticosteroids administered during tonsillectomies, they don’t increase grave bleeding events substantially.
